"השקט" נכתב על חוויית שיט במרחבי הענק של האוקיינוס השקט, בין איים יפהפיים, עצי קוקוס ונגינת יוקלילי. הוא גם מתאר את חוויית  בדידות על סיפונו של כלי שיט קטן, החוצה מים רבים.

ביומן ייחודי זה, שנכתב בזמן אמת, הלל מגן מתאר את מסעו לאורך מסלול של כ־ 18,000 ק"מ (10,000 מייל ימי), בין האי קוראסאו שבים הקריבי וניו־זילנד שבדרום־מערב האוקיינוס השקט.

זהו יומן של מסע לא מתוכנן, על סיפוניהן של שלוש יאכטות שונות, עם בעלים וצוותים מתחלפים. הוא מתרחש לאורך תשעה חודשים של שנת 1980, בתקופה שבה ניווט לווייני ואביזרי בקרת שיט שונים עדיין לא היו אפילו בגדר חלום.

"השקט" שייך לעולם שיט שהיה ואיננו, שבו האדם הוא ישות דלת־אמצעים אל מול כוחות הטבע האדירים. הוא מתאר אהבה גדולה לים ולכוחות הטבע האלה, על הסערות ועל השקט שהם משרים לסירוגין על מרחבי האוקיינוס.
